FAQ (DIY Art Kits)

What age is best appropriate for doing a kit?
Ages 5 to 125.

Ages 5 to 8, recommended to do with supervision!

Some pieces could be sharp and too small for small hands to handle.

What kind of adhesive is included?
All kits include a pre-mixed mortar paste. You can also use a wood glue (brands like Gorilla Glue or Weldbond work), found at your local hardware store.

What is the grout for?
Grout is a dry sand compound that is mixed with water to create a paste to fill the gaps between the tiles. Just like a tiled floor or wall has grout lines between each tile,  in the kits, we use the same kind of grout for completing your mosaic.

Where do you get the tiles from?
Many of the tiles are hand-cut in my studio, from a collection of vintage crockery and fabricated glass. In addition to a unique selection of tiles from all over the world.

How do I know what colors I’m getting in my kit?
Currently, the selections of Bird kits have titles in specified colors. The ones labeled Bird will have tiles in that hue (they can range from light, to dark, within a broad range of blues including patterns) and the ones labeled  Bird have tiles within red tones (these vary from oranges to pinks, reds, purples, and patterned tiles). Some of these specific colored kits will also include accent tiles in different colours, like gold or silver.

All other kits have a variation of multicolored, fun, sparkly tiles.

How long does it take to complete the activity?

The mosaic application can take anywhere from 45 minutes, to 2 hours. This all depends on your level of detail in design, application technique, etc….. You may choose to use a tile cutter to further cut and shape the tiles. Once all the tiles are applied, wait 24 hours for the glue to dry fully. Then grouting takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
